A Bull Calf

On my walk today I noticed this little chap amongst the tall grass. It was a Bull calf born to a (black and white cross) Hereford cow. I guessed this one is being reared as an eventual Bull (for reasons that I wont go into here). Mother and calf were amongst a small herd of cows used for rearing 'Beef' calfs.

It eventually decided to get up and go for a prance around.

Stopping only for lunch.

Having received some sustenance, it decided to have a butting competition with Mum.

However it gave up shortly afterwards.

Cute little calf. I love your new header illustration. Who drew it?

What a sweet fuzzy fellow! Now having a best friend who is a dairy farmer, I'd say they use a cross bull for first time moms. A smaller first calf. My friend uses a Jersey bull, for first time Holstein heifers...wow did I get all those terms correct???!!!

Thanks Kathie
Yes one of my efforts.

All sounds about right Evie.
In this case it wasn't a first time Mum though and it was something a lot bigger than a Jersey bull. Probably a Charolais cross.

All this animal husbandry talk is way over my head, but the little guy is adorable.

A very cute little fellow! I like his color. He seems very happy with mom. There are some calves a couple miles from my house that I drive by all the time, but there isn't any place to pull over and stop to watch them. I'd love to take their photo. Thanks for sharing these!

Wonderful animals, cute and adorable calves and all great photos. Wish I could take one home with me but I don't think I could get one past the Home Owners Association darn it!

Denise, yes they are cute but not house trained and he would get an awful lot bigger. {:)
