Tracking down the Red Admiral

The Red Admiral (Venessa Atalanta).

I posted an image of the Red Admiral on 13th September. It wasn't great, but it had been the only opportunity of taking a photograph of the species this year so far.

I went for a cycle ride today and decided to check out a place that I had seen the Red Admiral in previous years. It was a remote Fenland road and the specific area of interest was a group of Ivy bushes and nettles. Sure enough when I arrived and waited for a short while two of the species turned up and flew around the area. One had a small piece missing from its wing, but the other was in quite good condition.

Some of this species hibernate, but the majority are summer migrants to this Country, which normally would be numerous. This year they have been rare for some reason, probably the continuous rainfall.

Thanks Helen
You can see why I was keen to get some good shots this year which I had not been able to before.

Hi Ocean
Thanks

Really lovely shots Roy. I am very partial to butterfly pictures. :)

Beautiful! I spent quite a bit of time yesterday with a butterfly that would not open its wings for me....and here you have a dozen shots of one just displaying like crazy! Maybe British butterflies are better trained :-)

I know how hard it is sometimes to get great butterfly shots Roy! Nice work!

Hi Roy

Lovely shots of the Red Admiral. I haven't seen that many over here either. Mind you we have not had that many nice calm sunny days for the poor little devils to bask! Maybe a late Indian Summer???

Best wishes, Adrian

Thanks Joan. They mostly are colourful.

You need a commanding voice Mary.?? {:)

Thanks Eve.

Hi Adrian,
Thanks. I have seen a few more Brimstone, Large Whites and loads of Speckled Woods today. Although there were reports that the Speckled Wood was supposed to be in short supply this year, but I dont recognise that opinion.

Hi Roy

Me neither - I have seen quite a few Speckled Woods, and very nice they are too!

Best wishes, Adrian

Hi Roy
Funny, but I've seen quite a few Red Admirals this year around the levels and at home, hardly any Tortoishells though, until recently that is, they seem to have made a slight come back this autumn which is great!

Its really weird Jen,
I have never known such a shortage of these two species especially the Tortoishell. Hopefully the Sun we are getting now will bring them out wherever they are.

The return trip and the wait were worth it because you sure got some stunning images.
